Development

Success Story from Central Karoo

In 2019, WCTF embarked on a development programme in the Central Karoo that focused on modified tennis in primary school and reviving adult social tennis.
61 learners with ages ranging from 10 to 15 years, 8 teachers and 6 DCAS mod-coaches attended the training a 1 day training session.
The coaches were asked to identify the areas they are struggling with which were gradually discussed, slowly illustrated, demonstrated, practiced, and put into a game situation. A classical lesson which includes introduction, safety, warm-up, organisation, demonstration, explanation and attending to some skills while encouraging fun and enjoyment and team games.
Modified league was activated in Beaufort West, talented players were “promoted” to formal tennis. A team were developed to participate in the WCTF mainstream events and in 2024 a team participated in the TSA/WC BNP Rising Star event.

Launch of Darling Tennis Club

The Darling Tennis Club, was founded in May 2025 in the West Cape town of Darling. It is a vibrant community initiative dedicated to uplifting local youth through tennis. Starting with just four children, the club has quickly grown to serve 42 young athletes, offering free coaching in a safe and encouraging environment. Driven by the vision that “a child on the court is ultimately a child out of court,” the club uses tennis to provide structure, mentorship, and hope—steering children away from risks like gangsterism and substance abuse.

Run entirely by volunteers and donations, the club has achieved key milestones such as official affiliation with the West Coast District Tennis Federation and participation in competitive matches.

Malmesbury development programme

The Western Cape Tennis Federation recently hosted a highly successful development camp in Malmesbury, designed to nurture the next generation of tennis talent. Bringing together young participants aged 9 to 15, the camp provided intensive skills development under the expert stewardship of the WCTF. This initiative offered a dynamic platform for youth and emerging athletes to enhance their technical abilities, tactical understanding, and overall love for the game, reinforcing the federation's deep commitment to grassroots development and creating a lasting impact on the sporting landscape of the region.

Beaufort West Trio - Train the Trainer, Coaching Clinic & Schools Tennis

This year, the Western Cape Tennis Federation delivered a powerful trio of interventions in Beaufort West, each designed to strengthen the local tennis ecosystem. The impactful series began with a "Train the Trainer" workshop, empowering local coaches and volunteers with essential skills. This was followed by a dynamic coaching clinic for aspiring players and culminated in a comprehensive schools development programme, ensuring the sport reaches the youth directly. All three initiatives were exceptionally well-attended, demonstrating a strong community appetite for tennis and marking a significant step in building a sustainable and thriving tennis network in the region.
